Installation of Underfloor Heating Systems in New and Renovated Homes

When building new homes today, underfloor heating systems are starting to be a very popular choice.  The older radiators converted heat upward and outward, meaning the upper area of the room would be heated first and the lower part of the room would take more time to warm.

Totally opposite of the old way are the newer underfloor systems.  The total floor surface is heated, allowing the heat to rise, warming the room to a more comfortable temperature at a quicker rate which in turn saves on heating bills.  Saving money is not the only reason to install underfloor heating systems.  It is a very comfortable and modern convenience available today that was not obtainable in the past.  Once your neighbors visit and see the difference, they will all want this system in their homes.

When it comes to installing electric underfloor heating systems, two main types will need to be considered: wet or dry.  The wet system, as the name suggests, uses water to move the heat.  It is comparable to traditional central heating and needs to be connected to some source of heat, such as a boiler.  The process of traditional central heating uses radiators and circulates water warmed to approximately 80 to 90 degrees.  The underfloor system heats from beneath the flooring, is more efficient and only requires the water to be around 50 degrees, thus saving an immense amount of money on fuel bills over the years you will be living in your home.

If you are putting in a wet heating system in a home being built, it is just a matter of placing it under the sub-flooring.  If you are renovating your home, this system would be much too costly, so a dry underfloor heating system would probably be the better option.  These only require mesh or electrical heating cables to supply the heat and only the top flooring layer needs to be removed.  The disadvantage, however, is that the dry system is not as energy efficient as the wet system in comparison.

When renovating or building a new home, serious thought should be given to underfloor heating systems.  You not only will be extremely pleased with the lower utility bills, but also it will create a warm and comfortable living experience.
