Commercial Kitchen Design

I’m sure you’ve heard it say that so much of cooking is in the presentation of the food. That beautiful piece of cheesecake with the strawberry syrup swirled perfectly doesn’t happen on accident. Restaurants have not only mastered the art of cooking, but to be truly successful, they have also mastered the art of designing the perfect kitchen. Just as presentation is important to cooking, having an efficient kitchen is imperative to running a restaurant. Follow the three easy steps listed below to help make the somewhat difficult task of designing your kitchen even easier.

1. Determine your purpose

First and foremost, a restaurant owner or a caterer has to ask themselves what they will be using the kitchen for. A kitchen that produces gourmet entrees versus a kitchen that creates delectable desserts will look and run very differently. Defining the purpose must be done first because the other steps flow out of this decision.

2. Determine your needs and wants

A person designing a commercial kitchen has to make sure to draw a firm line between needs and wants. It is possible to have both a stunningly beautiful and a successful kitchen, but be sure to determine which is more important to you. Are all stainless steel appliances necessary or is it simply something that you want to make it look more extravagant? Don’t fall into the trap of spending your budget on things that will not make you more money in the long run. On the other hand, it is usually wise and lucrative to invest in top of the line appliances and employees as these will affect the success of your business.

3. Determine your layout

Once you have clearly outlined the purpose of the kitchen and made the necessary decisions on where the money will be spent, spend plenty of time deliberating over the layout of things within the kitchen. Just like an assembly line, your kitchen needs to be designed in a way that encourages rather than discourages efficiency and productivity. Allow for plenty of counter space for preparing near the ovens and place orders waiting to be served as close to the door into the restaurant as possible. These decisions may seem all too basic, but all too often people overlook them and continually pay for their mistakes once the kitchen opens.

Commercial kitchen design can be exciting and also overwhelming. In order to avoid the headache and stress of the process, spend time on the front end determining your purpose, your needs from your wants, and the layout of your dream kitchen. These three easy steps will make the process much more enjoyable and help you to create the kitchen of your dreams.
