How to Make Your Kitchen Cabinets More Modern

the kitchenIf you want to give your kitchen a more modern look but you cannot afford a full kitchen remodeling project, then you might consider just giving your cabinets a makeover. The kitchen cabinets and more specifically, the kitchen cabinet doors, are among the most visible elements in the entire kitchen. If you give them a modern twist then you might get the modern kitchen you desire.

The most important thing to remember when you are trying to accomplish modern decorating is clean lines and one or two tone color pallets. Carvings, beveling, or trim are not something you will find in a modern kitchen. Modern kitchen cabinet doors will have straight lines across the top and will be simple without any decoration or beveling. Too many colors is distracting and takes away from the modern feel. Two toned color pallets are a great modern decorating tool. Make sure that everything in the kitchen is one of two colors. If you want your cabinets to be interesting, you could paint the doors one color and the frames another.

If you are using your old cabinet doors and they already have beveling, then you might consider cutting out the center section and replacing it with glass or Plexiglas. The open feeling these clear cabinet doors creates is important to modern design. Modern designers use natural light, space, and openness as much as possible. The only drawback to this type of kitchen cabinet is that you need to keep your cabinets organized and neat at all times.

In keeping with the clean lines, door handles are sometimes distracting. Modern kitchen cabinet doors rarely have handles. Instead, you will find a groove cut into the underside of the door so that you can pull it open underneath rather than with a handle. If you are resurfacing your old cupboard doors, then you might have to cut this groove yourself. It should go as close to the side without hinges as possible and on the underside. The only exception is with stationary kitchen islands where the cabinets are below you so the groove should be cut on the top of the cabinet door.
