Save Money By Buying The Right Food Strainer
Many people waste a lot of money by having multiple food strainers in their kitchen tool arsenal (myself included), but this is completely unnecessary in most kitchens. Unless you are doing some very specific cooking techniques, there are going to be a couple of strainers that will suit every need you might have. In this post I want to show you how to figure out which is the right one, and some things that require specific strainers.
It’s important to note here that I’m not talking about food colanders. Colanders have much larger perforations in the bottom of them and usually have some sort of foot or stand to hold them up. These are useful tools, but not the same thing as a food strainer. Most people will have both in their kitchen.
To figure out which food strainer you need, you must first determine the size. Take a look at the biggest pot you have that normally cook with. Your strainer needs to be big enough to fit on the top of that. This will be used for straining soups and broths.
After you’ve determined size look at materials. Most importantly, you want to avoid plastic strainers at all costs. It might be appealing because of its low price, but you will melt it at some point, I guarantee! Instead, you want one that is metal on the outside, with either a mesh or tightly perforated interior. Mesh is best if you are going to juice berries and other fruit, but perforated metal can take more of a beating.
Some of the things that use a specific strainer are mashed potatoes that use a food mill strainer to get their consistency (a food processor works as well), and filtering home brew beer requires a different style of strainer. If you don’t plan on either of those you are just fine!
Needing more than one food strainer is just silly. Get the right one the first time and you save money and a ton of space in your kitchen!
